History of the Pattern

This is an old pattern, but has never lost it’s popularity on Ozarks trout streams.

Larry Hurt, a regular at Hargrove’s shop, single handily has seen to the resurrection of this pattern. This is in the top 3 best selling flies at the shop - and for good reason, it simply works everywhere!

Materials

  • Hook: 1/100 oz. Jig hook (gold), with the lead painted white with Wapsi Powder Paint

  • Thread: White (example: Uni 6/0, UTC 140D)

  • Body: DMC Embroidery Thread (B5200) .

Tying Instructions

  • Paint the Jig head with Wapsi Powder paint (white)

  • Mount the jig in the vise

  • Start the thread behind the bead and capture 2 or 3 strands of the DMC embroidery thread wrapping to the bend of the hook

  • Wrap the thread back to the lead head

  • Wrap the DMC embroidery thread up the hook shank to the lead head and tie down with tying thread

  • Whip finish and repeat. You’ll need a few dozen of these once your friends see how well it works

Fishing Hints

  • Fish the Big Hurt under an indicator

  • Be sure the tippet is perpendicular to the shank so the fly rides somewhat parallel to the bottom
